I was caught bare handed by Music”

Music is magic it makes you feel alive, and for some it is also the reason they are alive.

This disciplined form of art has its own beauty that many crave to learn, to understand and to also get trained, however its only possible for a few lucky ones to get trained formally. Blame it on time constraints or lack of the right source.Luckily for us we live in an age where almost everything is on our fingertips, even learning music.

The decade from 2005:

2005 was the year when most of the India was transferring from offline to online, also the year  a young man from IIIT – Hyderabad found a dearth in the way information about Indian heritage is being communicated to public, he saw that we had access to only a drop of the ocean of information .Our heritage is varied in so many forms and it had to be out for the people in the right way.”Music caught me bare handed”, says Gopala Koduri the founder of Musicmuni.

The  Sangeet Journey : History

Gopala was in the third year when he decided that he wanted to combine technology and music together, he therafter pursued a degree in Music Information Retrieval . The journey began when he went to do an internship in IIT Mumbai, that’s where he met Sankalp Gulati. They both had the same thing on mind Music +Technology.

In a seminar in IIT –Bombay they happened to meet Prof.Xavier Serra from the Music Technology Group of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. He  co ordinated CompMusic a research project funded by the European Research Council. It focused on five music traditions of the world: Hindustani (North India), Carnatic (South India), Turkish-makam (Turkey), Arab-Andalusian (Maghreb) and Beijing Opera (China). The work on Hindustani and Carnatic music is carried out in collaboration with teams in IIT-M and IIT-B.  Prof. Hema Murthy and Prof. Preeti Rao lead these teams respectively.Around this time a grant was transferred to develop prototype products tailored for Indian market .

MusicMuni Labs in India was formed to develop viable business around these technologies and prototypes in February 2017.

How did the audience take to this new technology :

There are many small steps that lead to where we see our product and company today. These include our ability to build an app like Riyaz and put it out in the market with quick iterations. Riyaz is an app that helped people to learn singing and also practice other exercises that are recorded and structured by experts.

Continued shower of love and appreciation from around the world has been an incredible boost to them.

The App has reached 310000 downloads on google play store with not even a single penny spent from on marketing or promotions. All this within a span of eight months.

All this validates that we are making a positive impact on society, and that for us is the biggest achievement.

An App and its technical hiccups:

As of now Riyaz is available on Google play store and  coming soon on App Store. This was not a smooth journey as Technology has its own hiccups.

Building an app on Android platform is a challenge. With so many devices out there supporting Android OS, there is no room for leeway on the quality of the app that you build.

Even having 10 devices at hand to test, there can be a device that can surprise you out there. This calls for a very systematic approach both in development and testing. Apart from the in-house manual testing, we take help from AppAccchi to functionally test our app and help us point out the crashes and the performance issues with out app.

With regular performance reports being sent from Appachhi , the App is tested on various devices with different parameters and also each build is tested.

“But again, it is always better for a developer to understand the possible points of bugs/crashes and avoid any chances of them being produced in the the production environment with stringent coding measures.”says Swapnil Gupta the Tech Lead at Music Muni.
