Quite sure this is not on your list to do when you are in your 20’s. This, however, is few of the many things achieved by Gaurang Shetty – CEO RIIDL and also the Head of the Facebook Developer circle Mumbai. We are privileged to be in conversation with this Champ.
What is Riidl ?
RiiDL,is an initiative of Somaiya Vidyavihar to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship amongst youth, comprises of a Technology Business Incubator (TBI, supported by Somaiya Vidyavihar and Department of Science & Technology, Government of India), a Fablab (an initiative of Centre for Bits and Atoms, MIT USA) and a DIY Biolab.
Its a platform where one can take their ideas from mind to market. Our goal is to help innovators, entrepreneurs build solutions and create opportunities.
What are the areas that Riidl helps entrepreneurs in?
We have facilitated around 70 startups in the following thrust areas
Healthcare, Food, Internet of everything, SMAC (Social Mobile Analytics Cloud) & IT services, Agritech, Gaming, Not for profit startups (Differently abled job & training, Assistive solutions and services for blind people)
Which has been the one startup that you are really attached to ?
Infivention Technologies, product name : Square off.
It is the worlds smartest chess board and we won the coolest Tech award at CES las vegas.
I am close to the team, cause we are working on this idea since, inception and now Bhavya and Aatur have taken it to another level.
Considering that many of these platforms are app based or tech-based how do you test such apps?
We have a very strong internship program and in-house Tech support which helps startups to realize their ideas quickly.
Our fab and bio labs too add a lot of value and help our startups accelerate. We have partnered with multiple agencies to do product testing and certification.The Appachhi platform could help a lot in this process it does help a lot in the performance testing . It makes the process more defined and easy.
Maker mela – has also been an integral part of your journey .
Maker Mela is the premier platform for grassroot innovations in India. We had over 50000+ visitors in our previous event. Makers from taiwan, china, japan, USA etc and various part of India showcased their innovations.
Being the Mumbai Head – Facebook Developer Circle
Developer circles from Facebook is a great way for developers to connect and collaborate . Each Circle is locally organized by members of the community.
We have 10,400 + members in our Mumbai DevC community.
We do a lot of community events like hack day, build day ,meetups and also mentoring sessions for our developers.
Another area of focus is to engage as many youngsters and women in activities and also to make them more skilled.
Many developers who were building on react, rebound and other tools are now learning from their peers in the community.
DevC community helps developers to build things quickly and share resources. A lot of startups use this platform to source talent and interns.
You were recently invited for the Facebook Developer conference – what new possibilities and developments are we looking at.
I am excited about Oculus Go. I think VR will soon catch up and evolve.
Who is your role model and why?
I admire Jack Ma and have been listning to his talks. I am super inspired by him and I hope to meet him someday!
The biggest lesson of learning from others failures (rather than just listening to success stories) helps me overcome hurdles at work. It helps me understand what not to do.
